She was quoted as saying, "It's a love story set in UP's Chambal area. It's about two races, two religions and two states." The budget for this film is 980 million rupees. As of October 2015, the film was said to be running behind schedule. Bhansali cited Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone's lack of availability for the delays. However, by the end of January 2016, both actors had joined the shoot. With five months left for its release date, filming was still ongoing as late as October 2016.
